Selfterview #3

So, "Transmit." Where did that come from?
Well, it has to do with the last conversation I had with Steve Lacy.

When was that?
Late May of 2004

So that would have been...
...just before he died, yes.

What was said?
Steve started telling me that what he did...what I did...what we ALL did was "spiritual transmission." In his words, "From me to you, and then you back to me. You see? I pass it on to you and then you send it to me...and to others."

Hmmm...sounds kind of spooky.
Well, I guess it was. On the other hand, it was a helluva education.

What do you mean?
I learned a lot from Steve. Mainly by watching him. In this instance, I had never seen someone that close to death. Particularly someone I had grown fond of and had developed a sense of.

A "sense of"?
Steve never struck me as an overly spiritual person. He struck meet as a very cagey and diplomatic person...

So...?
He kept his spirituality to himself.

Until?
Until the end. And that was disconcerting...and inspiring. To see someone who was so careful but so self-aware. Self-aware enough to know that he was near the end and that it was okay (and important) to let go of all the knowledge he could. And even if releasing this knowledge was embarrassingly revealing, it had to be done.

What was this revealing?
It was revealing that Steve ultimately believed his work and life had a spiritual dimension.

That's not such a new concept.
No, but it is a surprising concept coming from a person who was so intellectually inclined.

Surprising?
Yeah...you wouldn't expect that from someone who appeared to be agnostic.

Okay, so it was surprising.
But don't you see? The element of surprise gives the spiritual concept so much more weight and intensity. This older man revealing this to me at that moment...it was shocking. And that shock bore me up onto his music...
